Score one for the EU

Great news today: the EU is actually going to take a hard look at Oracle’s takeover of Sun. Even better, the minister who announced it actually said they are looking at the main issue, whether Oracle plans to kill off or cripple MYSQL and Java. It would be difficult to imagine cooperative open source work for digital preservation making any sustained headway over the next few years if they don’t do anything to maintain MySQl (or move Oracle’s DB itself into full open source) and keep JAVA open source as well.
